Hi Reader,
A few months ago, I was at a worship event when we started singing a song.
As we sang, I realized I actually disagreed with some of the lyrics:
I’m sorry when I’ve just gone through the motions
I’m sorry when I just sang another song
I’m sorry when I’ve come with my agenda
Oh, I’m not here for blessings
What these lyrics express is, of course, solid and right. But that night, they hit me differently.
I thought, "No, I'm really grateful that sometimes I kept going through the motions. It's what kept me from walking away from the faith and ministry. And sometimes I'm thankful I just sang another song, because I actually kept singing even when I didn't feel like it."
The truth is, I still keep showing up in my relationship with Christ with my agenda, and yep, I still sometimes want the gift, not the Giver. Fortunately, God has always worked with imperfect, mixed-motive people.
But here’s the upside. Going through the motions has probably kept you married, kept important friendships alive, kept you at your church, and kept you in leadership.
And thankfully, God has always worked with imperfect, mixed-motive people.
“
Eventually, your emotions catch up to your obedience.

So, if you’re going through the motions this Monday, congrats. Thanks for showing up.
The willingness to show up day after day remains one of the keys to long-term faithfulness—and to effective leadership.
Tomorrow is a fresh day.
