On the Rise: Gen Z are spiking bible sales + Friday’s a bad idea for surgery + 5 marriage killers

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, Gen Z is spiking bible sales, why your attention is the most endangered resource on earth, why you shouldn’t have surgery on Fridays, and five losing strategies for marriage.

Bible Sales Up 87% in 5 Years

Give Gen Z the credit.

You’ve heard already that Bible sales are up, but THIS up?

In Great Britain, bible sales are up a whopping 87% since 2019, a trend that’s driven mainly by the next generation.

One expert notes:

“We are at the centre of a significant cultural shift regarding matters of faith and religion. Atheism, once considered by modern society to be the view of most rational adults, no longer seems to carry the same weight or appeal.”

The most interesting thing is that young adults are far more open spiritually than Boomers or even Gen X.

England is often a harbinger of things to come in a post-Christian world, and this is a trend worth watching. Pockets of the church are very much coming back to life in the UK.

Are You Trusting God… Or Just Being Foolish?

Reminder: Coaching call next week!

Have you ever wrestled with the question: Am I trusting God… or just making a bad decision?

In ministry, the line between faith and foolishness can be razor-thin. Is it bold trust… or reckless risk? A step of faith… or a step too far?

THIS Tuesday, April 22, I’m hosting a Live Coaching Call for all-access members of the Academy.

You’ll get a practical framework to help you:

  • Discern faith from irresponsibility
  • Lead with confidence in your decisions
  • Trust God without being irresponsible

RSVP now to get the details and join us live. See you Tuesday!

Don't Get Your Surgery on Friday

You’re 5% more likely to have complications…or die.

Doctors and nurses are people, too. And getting your surgery done on a Friday is not the same as having it done on a Tuesday or Thursday.

According to a major new study, you’re 5% more likely to die, have complications, or be readmitted.

Why? Well, here’s why that’s so.

Facebook to Remove Live Videos

Save your content before it’s gone.

Did you hear about Facebook Live's policy update? Now, all live videos will be deleted after 30 days. If your church relies on Facebook to store your past sermons and services, you need to act now to save your content before it’s gone.

Over 20,000 ministries trust Subsplash for the best digital tools, like streaming, storing, and managing their video libraries—without worrying about constant social media policy changes.

My Weekly Book Recommendation

The Sirens' Call: How Attention Became the World's Most Endangered Resource, by Chris Hayes

This book does a better job than any I’ve read at explaining how our entire lives have been about grabbing other people’s attention. That includes church leaders.

While it’s longer than it needs to be, this is an excellent treatment of the topic.

Podcast I'm Listening To

The five losing strategies every couple struggles with.

Terry Real’s appearance on the Tim Ferriss show is compelling for several reasons.

First, when he outlines the five losing strategies most couples struggle with, my desperate attempts to get things to go my way in my marriage flashed before my eyes. Guilty as charged.

The five losing strategies, by the way, are:

  1. Being right
  2. Controlling your partner
  3. Unbridled self-expression
  4. Retaliation
  5. Withdrawal

The second reason I love this episode is that Tim shares a few chapters from Terry’s book, Fierce Intimacy. I almost turned the pod off at that point because so many audiobooks are read by robotic professional voice actors. But I’m glad I didn’t.

Terry did the narration, and every author should have their book narrated this way. It sounds like he’s talking with you. Isn’t that the best listen?

Having recorded several audiobooks with a major publisher, I’ve had a New York City producer on the line for days with me, listening to every single word and telling me to go back and ‘enunciate better’ or “don’t be so casual.” But life is casual, and so is real conversation. I love how natural his ‘read’ is on these chapters. I wish more audio books embraced this approach.

Cheering for you,

Weekend Watching: Glenn Packiam

This week on the podcast, Glenn Packiam talks about how to pastor in an age where no one trusts pastors, the church leader mental health crisis (especially among next-gen leaders), and the difference between being weary and being wounded in leadership.
