On the Rise: Two states are more Christian today. Which ones? + Secrets to innovation and self-control

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, a map showing where Christianity is rising and falling, what fuels true innovation (it’s not what you think), the relevance of 1776, and James Clear on improving your self-control.

How Non-Christian Is Your State?

A map of states showing where Christianity is surging or falling.

The religious landscape is always changing. While I love good news, real leadership involves naming reality and working toward a better day.

This map shows which states are seeing a rise and which states are seeing a slump in the percentage of people calling themselves Christian.

Only two states have seen growth, while 48, led by Oregon, are seeing a slump in self-identified Christians. Find out where your state ranks here.

A Secret Hack for Innovation

Try combining existing ideas.

Here’s a fun surprise. What if innovation isn’t really coming up with never-before-seen breakthroughs? What if it’s combining different existing ideas into something new?

That seems to be the pattern fueling breakthroughs.

Examples:

  • Uber is like Airbnb for cars.
  • The movie Alien was pitched as Jaws in Space.
  • The phone you’re reading this on combines a camera, browser, email, and iPod in one device.

Maybe you’re closer to your next breakthrough than you think.

My Weekly Book Recommendation

1776, by David McCullough

While the founding of America might seem like eons ago (249 years to be exact), the similarities between the past and the future are astonishing.

I read this a few years ago and was surprised to see how many of the issues America is dealing with today are similar or almost identical to the issues and values at stake back in 1776.

If the best way to understand the present and see the future is to understand the past, this beautifully written post is well worth your time.

James Clear Quote I’m Pondering

What if self-control is as much about place as will?

Think about self-control less as the quality of a person and more as the quality of a place. There are some places and situations that lean toward lower self-control and others that lean toward higher self-control. Self-control is about your context as much as your character. Put yourself in good positions.

The advice we give our teenagers (stop hanging out with him….don’t go to parties like that) is advice we could use as adults.

Who or what is making it difficult for you to stay faithful or maintain your integrity? Remove that setting or influence from your life.

Cheering for you,
