On The Rise: Gen Z has a worship war, AI job loss & the path to misery
Published 8 days ago • 4 min read
Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.
Today, some more insight on what appears to be a growing gap between Gen Z men and women, and how to reach them. Plus, potential AI job loss coming soon to a congregation near you, James Clear on the difference between mastery and misery, and a few other gems.
The Gen Z Worship War
The gender divide widens.
So, as you may have noticed, there’s a difference between how Gen Z men and women are responding to faith, with men leaning in a bit harder than women.
Not that you need to change everything you’re doing, but this might explain why you’re seeing traction with some groups and not with others.
Shift From "We Can't Afford That" to "We Can't Afford Not To"

Too many churches stay stuck, not because they lack vision, but because they don’t have the funding to move it forward. Personally, I'm tired of churches being broke.
That doesn’t have to be your story, and you don’t have to try to grow on a shoestring budget.
Instead of feeling awkward every time you talk about money… Imagine leading financial conversations that boldly support your mission.
Instead of apologizing for the budget… Imagine inviting people into a vision they’re excited to fund.
Instead of quietly scaling back… Imagine breaking through the ceilings that have held you back for years.
Fund the Future is my masterclass with Craig Groeschel, Chris Hodges, Ashley Wooldridge, and Dan Clark, where you’ll unlock the resources, insights, and strategies your church needs to move forward—today and for tomorrow.
As an all-access member, you already have access to the course. So, are you ready to dive in?
The story that not many are talking about…but should be.
I’ve been deep diving into AI for months, not to hack a chatbot or switch careers, but to think through the implications for leaders and the church. But in the meantime, you may have caught the CEO of Anthropic (the company behind Claude.ai) saying earlier this summer that an AI bloodbath is coming for white collar workers.
It’s an easy story to miss. But if you start reading job stories in the news most weeks, you’ll notice numerous white collar and tech companies quietly reducing their workforces and deciding not to hire recent graduates.
The implication for church leaders?
Well, among many implications, imagine looking over the most well-educated, formerly successful, and once affluent members of your congregation every Sunday, who are no longer employed.
Not trying to be a downer here, but this is a trend you should be watching and responding to pastorally.
Expect to hear a lot more on AI and its implications from me and my team moving forward. It is the story of our lifetime that not enough leaders are talking about.

This is a collection of first-hand accounts of Americans who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Far from depressing, it’s a set of first-hand accounts of how people survived, co-operated, and even worked together to make it through a terrible economic decade.
Surprisingly, you’ll find more hope here than you imagine. And it’s instructive for our dystopian times, too.
One question church leaders keep asking is, what do I do about my boss/lead pastor? Enter Bree Groff, workplace expert who explains what to do when you have a bad boss, don't love your job, and the future of work. Plus, Bree talks about how to become a better boss and what kind of jobs will make the cut during the coming AI revolution.
