On The Rise: College kids and Atheism + How to respond when people leave your church
Published about 5 hours ago • 3 min read
Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.
Today, some surprising findings from Ryan Burge on whether college really does beat the faith out of your kids (it doesn’t), how to respond when people leave your church, Steve Jobs, and a quote about the power of good and bad habits.
Surprise! Sending Your Kids to College Doesn’t Make Them Atheists
It’s time to debunk another myth.
You’ve heard it said that you shouldn’t send your kids to college because it could make them lose their faith. But is that true?
Ryan Burge shows, quite convincingly, that the group most likely to identify as non-religious (or a None) is people who dropped out of high school. The least likely to be non-religious? Those with a graduate degree.
Go figure.
Here’s hoping we leave behind the cultural narrative that insists faith and a vibrant intellectual life are mutually exclusive.

People like Steve Jobs come along once in a generation. As conflicted and difficult as he was, he was also a genius.
Isaacson’s insanely great biography of Steve is a classic. I love reading it not only to find the good, but to notice the areas in myself that still need a lot of work (and redemption).
Good habits stockpile ease. Bad habits postpone pain.
