On The Rise: Do You Like AI Bots More Than Real People? Um…

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, some fresh data shows that a disturbing number of teens prefer AI chats to actual human relationships.

Plus, the state of the workplace in 2025 (it’s not great and could use the church), how to pronounce hard-to-say foods, and being known for what you’re FOR not what you’re against.

Teens Think AI Companions Beat Human Companions

Youth Pastor alert 🚨

New research reveals that 72% of teens have used AI companions (chatbots), and an astonishing 31% of them prefer AI to human companionship.

Yikes.

As if things haven’t been hard enough with the anxiety and depression induced by social media, AI is poised to take isolation to a new level.

Youth Pastors are on the front lines of figuring out how to deal with challenges no generation has encountered before.

The best emerging parenting advice is quickly becoming “don’t let your kids have unmonitored access to AI.” And sometimes, it’s “don’t let your kids use AI at all.”

Something Special Next Week ☕

Next week’s going to be fun.

Every Black Friday, my team and I like to give back with something simple… and caffeinated: FREE Starbucks.

We’ll be posting barcodes you can scan to grab a coffee on us.

This year, extra cards are being dropped inside The Art of Leadership Academy, so be sure to sign in next Friday. The ones on Instagram go fast.

Great leaders run on community… and many on caffeine, too.

Stay tuned!

If Church Hurt Wasn’t Tough Enough

80% of US workplaces are now seen as toxic.

A new Monster survey reports that 80% of workers say their place of unemployment has a negative impact on their mental health.

I’ve long believed that the church can and should model the way for what a healthy workplace looks like. Maybe this is our time to get even healthier and shine a light.

Weekly Book Recommendation

Know What You're For, by Jeff Henderson

Everyone says they want to start a movement, but some people do. If you’ve seen the #FOR signs around your community and elsewhere in the world, it goes back to this gem of a concept by Jeff Henderson.

Jeff’s a long-time friend, and this book crystallizes his life-message about how to be known for what you’re for, not what you’re against. It’s spread literally all over the world and far beyond the church.

Timely. We could use a fresh dose of focusing on what we’re FOR right now.

The 20 Most Mispronounced Foods

International foods that are tricky to say out loud.

Well, I got Açai and Pho correct, but thank goodness I now know how to pronounce Gyro (I had that so wrong).

I had a Brit recently tell me that my pronunciation of Worcestershire was bang on. But to know I’ve not quite got Focaccia right is crushing (You don’t pronounce the ‘a.')

Cheering for you,
