On The Rise: Surprising marriage trends, layoffs, and great mac and cheese

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, some surprising trends about marriage, how to develop better habits, practical advice for leaders who get laid off, and some sweet mac and cheese recipes.

The Majority of Americans Are Not Married

Time to rethink your sermon illustrations (and who you’re reaching).

A new Barna study might cause you to rethink most of the assumptions about the families you’re serving or trying to reach.

Among the surprising findings:

  • The majority of people in America aren’t married.
  • Christians divorce as often as non-Christians.
  • 42% of Christians now think it’s ‘wise’ to live together before getting married.

This is more than worth your time to digest and discuss with your team.

Here’s What to Do If You Get Laid Off

Advice from a former Chief People Officer.

If you’re thinking of trashing the church that just laid you off, think again. That's according to a former Chief People Officer who has laid off hundreds of people.

You may have noticed that employers are shedding jobs (especially white-collar jobs) like trees dropping leaves on a windy December night lately.

So, whether you’re pastoring people who've been laid off or you're looking for work yourself, here are some handy tips.

Weekly Book Recommendation

Atomic Habits, by James Clear

James Clear has sold over 25 million copies of Atomic Habits, which is insane. But that also means almost 8 billion people have never read it.

If you’re one of them and are ready to have a better 2026, there’s a reason this book has become a perennial bestseller.

I also really enjoyed interviewing James Clear on my podcast, where we dug into the backstory about how he became, well, the James Clear we know today. Fascinating story. You can watch that here.

The Best Mac and Cheese Recipes

Can you do this for New Year's Eve? I say yes…

I’m a sucker for a good mac and cheese, as I’m sure you are, as a highly intelligent leader. My favorite is to smoke it over my RecTeq pellet grill or Big Green Egg in a cast-iron Dutch oven for a smoky flavor that is crazy delicious.

This features two versions of mac and cheese you can try out this holiday season, as I might.

Mac and cheese is a good NYE side dish, right? Right?

Cheering for you,

Sharon Hodde Miller

Sharon Hodde Miller talks about entering ministry with an idealism that gets crushed when people break your heart and leave your church.

Plus, she discusses how to keep your heart engaged, how to fight cynicism, and when to speak into culture and when to keep silent.
