On The Rise: Gems on Church Health, AI Pastor Deepfakes, + De-Sizing the Church

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, some hot takes from Tim Stevens about church health many leaders miss, AI scammers are now targeting pastors, de-sizing the church, and tips for aspiring authors.

5 Hot Takes That (Quietly) Determine Church Health

Tim Stevens offers some gems.

I’ve always appreciated Tim Steven’s insights.

In this post, Tim outlines 5 leadership hot takes on everything from how functional boards operate, to meeting discipline, to why you don’t actually get things done. A quick, helpful read.

Transform Your Leadership… LIVE in Nashville

The world is changing fast. Great leaders move faster.

My goal for hosting The Art of Leadership Live is simple: You leave refreshed, focused, and ready to lead.

That’s why my team and I made it different than every other sit-and-listen conference.

Instead, you’ll have honest conversations with a hand-picked group of leaders, meaningful time to reflect, space to connect, and margin to actually plan your next steps.

And yes, a few brand-new keynotes and dynamic panels to help guide you along the way.

It’s three days that can truly transform your leadership for years to come—all happening in Nashville, TN this September.

As an All-Access member, you can save your seat now at the lowest rate available. Once tickets are gone, they’re gone.

AI Scammers are Coming After Pastors

Now you have to warn your church, not just your grandparents, about scams.

You’ve probably had the chat with your parents or grandparents about deepfake scams, including calls or FaceTimes they might get from a family member in trouble who ‘needs money now’.

“If you ever get a call like that, hang up and call me or call the family member right away. Chances are it’s a scam, Mom. Me and the kids never ask you for money,” is what I tell my folks.

Well, it looks like you might have to start having the same conversation with your church. “If you get a DM from me asking for money, check with us first.”

WIRED published a helpful piece explaining what’s happening and that churches are now the target of scammers.

Easter is Coming

Here's some help.

How are there fewer than 90 days until Easter? Didn’t we just get through the Christmas push?

This year, give up “creating graphics from scratch” for Lent—download Igniter’s free Easter media pack, featuring a huge selection of graphics and templates that’ll save you a ton of time.

And because “Sunday’s coming” is a relentless reality the other 51 weeks of the year, too, Igniter is also offering On the Rise readers an exclusive discount on any membership.

Raise your visual experience. Free up one thing from your plate and save time in the process.

Weekly Book Recommendation

De-Sizing the Church, by Karl Vaters

We’re in a season when church models and approaches are shifting again, and Karl Vater’s De-Sizing the Church offers helpful observations.

People often assume Karl and I are not friends and ‘oppose’ each other (because Karl champions small churches and I talk about church growth). Not true at all. We’ve spent some great time together.

Karl’s book offers a balanced critique of the church growth movement and some helpful pointers to church leaders. Well worth the read by leaders leading big and small churches.

How to Launch a Book

Tips for aspiring authors.

I published my last two books with Penguin Random House and learned a lot about publishing and marketing. I love talking to aspiring authors because, inevitably, working with a major publisher can feel mysterious.

Most publishers are happy to share, and Penguin Random House runs a free blog that offers over a decade of publishing tips, like this one on writing a great launch-day email.

Poking around will give you a lot more free author tips.

Cheering for you,

Weekend Watching

John Crist

Comedian and listener favorite John Crist returns to ask if we're being too critical of the church right now. Has our cynicism gone too far?

Plus, we talk about finding hope and do a detailed breakdown of exactly what it takes to appear on The Tonight Show.
