On The Rise: Why It’s Not Worse Than Ever + How To Self-Publish

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, they say it’s a sign of true intelligence to be able to hold two opposing views at the same time. So on that note, a piece that shows these days aren’t worse than the past, everything you need to know about self-publishing, changed views on women in leadership and a quote I’m thinking about that sets up your future.

17 Lessons From the Past….

…that can make you more confident about the future.

When the world is shaky, the future can seem scary. That’s where a bit of history can reassure us that, yes, we’ve been here before.

I stumbled on a helpful, insightful blog I’d never heard of with 17 quotes from a historian I’d never heard of.

How’s this for encouragement?

“When the church appears vulnerable and weak, it may be at its strongest. When it appears strong and powerful, it may be at its weakest.”

There are 16 more insights from history here.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Self-Publishing

Kevin Kelly drops a lifetime of learning.

So many leaders I talk to want to write a book. The big question is, how do you get published?

Kevin Kelly, a New York Times bestselling author, unpacks an extremely helpful guide to self-publishing, aptly titled Everything I Know About Self-Publishing. And he knows a lot.

By the way, self-publishing isn’t what it used to be. It’s become a much more robust and respected industry over the last decade+.

Having published with major publishers in the past, I’m using a hybrid publisher, Forefront Books, for my new book (out in September). It’s an experiment, but you have way more control over the IP and bulk sales while Simon and Schuster help with warehousing and distribution. Forefront has been great to work with so far.

I will likely go back to traditional publishers on future projects, but there are so many options now that didn’t exist before.

If you’ve ever wanted to write a book or explore self-publishing, bookmark this Kevin Kelly piece. He also chronicles the state of the publishing industry and book agents today (not what it used to be).

Compassion Changes Everything

Partnering in kingdom work brings powerful transformation.

When we lead with a posture of compassion, just as Jesus did, everything changes. Our lives change, our churches change.

By partnering with trusted Christian organizations, we follow in Jesus’ footsteps to actively love and serve others. Compassion International is a ministry that lives up to its powerful name — they understand that when we focus on showing compassion, we really do change things for people around the world and people in our churches every Sunday. I’ve seen in my own church how these kinds of partnerships are transformative.

And I’m not alone!

“[Partnering with] Compassion International became a catalyst for the members of our congregation to want to make a difference in the world. We are sponsoring hundreds of children across the world, and this partnership elevated our congregation’s awareness of our need to look outside of ourselves.”
– Lee Kricher, Senior Pastor at Amplify Church, Pittsburgh, PA

Book Recommendation

From Genesis to Junia by Preston Sprinkle

It’s rare to find an open mind these days, but Preston Sprinkle actually journals his journey from strict complimentarism to embracing an egalitarian view of women in leadership. What changed his mind? Scripture.

In an age where many books just grind out points people are trying to make, Preston offers a genuine curiosity and respect for different views while plotting out his own.

Also, he’s on the podcast later this month.

Quote I’m Pondering

“Your fantasies have cursed your realities.”

—David Eagleman

Bam. What fantasy are you holding onto about tomorrow that's stopping you from making today better?
