On The Rise: What Americans Believe About Eternity, Phone Problems for Adults, and Focus

Welcome to the On The Rise newsletter, where I feature fascinating, helpful, and sometimes curious content that caught my attention this week.

Today, why phones aren’t just a problem for kids, what Americans really believe about eternity, the impact of focus and the usefulness of the challenges you’re facing.

It’s Not Just The Kids

How Phones Hurt Adult Relationships and Married Couples.

There’s been a lot of (appropriate) attention on phones and kids. The reality is that phones are also impacting adult relationships like your team, your friendships, and, yes, your marriage too.

This article is an invitation to take an honest look in the mirror, and pursue greater attention, focus, and connection with the person you promised your attention to.

P.S. You should be mentioning the relational challenges for adults caused by technology in your preaching. It’s a big reason marriages and friendships keep dissolving or never reach their potential.

See You In Nashville?

Grab your ticket to The Art of Leadership Live before it’s too late!

I’ll cut right to the chase on this one.

Tickets to The Art of Leadership Live in September are going fast.

You can learn more about the conference here, and you still have some time to discuss it with your team or elders before tickets are gone.

If you decide that it’s a fit, I’d love to see you there.

What People Believe About Heaven and Hell

A bare majority of Americans still believe in both.

What do the people in your church and the people you’re trying to reach believe about heaven and hell?

Not surprisingly, belief in heaven is far more popular than belief in hell, but 54% of Americans still believe in both.

Ryan Burge breaks down belief in the supernatural by religious affiliation, race and in other categories here.

Book Recommendation

The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan

Most people try to do too much and end up doing very little well. The One Thing argues that real progress comes from ruthless focus. Ask: what’s the one thing that matters most right now? Do that first. When priorities shrink, impact grows. As you know, but easily forget, focus compounds results. Keller built a real estate empire with this mindset (he’s the Keller in Keller-Williams).

This is especially relevant in the digital chaos most leaders live in today.

Quote I’m Pondering

The challenges you’re facing might be exactly what you need to grow.
