The hidden AI stupid tax (are you paying it?)
Published about 9 hours ago • 2 min read
Hi Reader,
Does using AI make you dumber?
Actually, it might. But here's the important nuance: it's not whether you use AI, it's how.
Let me show you what I mean.
A Brown University economics professor has taught the same course for over thirty years. Last spring, he moved his midterm to a take-home exam. Enrolment nearly tripled. And when the exams came back, the class average was 96 percent (on a harder exam than usual), in a course where the historical average runs 65-80.
Something felt off, so he ran the exam through ChatGPT, and the AI's answers looked strangely familiar...
What happened next, when he moved the final exam back to in-person with no laptops, was remarkable (and one of the clearest examples of what AI is quietly doing to our minds). Watch the video below to hear how it ended.
But here's the principle underneath it: getting AI to create for you is like paying someone else to go to the gym for you. You can still spend the hour, but you didn't work a single muscle, and you walk out weaker than you walked in.
The stupid tax isn't what AI does to your work, it's what AI does to your mind while you're not doing the work. Think you're paying it?

In this video, I share the brain research behind all this (one MIT finding really unsettled me) and the three practices I'm using to make AI sharpen my mind instead of dulling it. One of them I had to relearn; even twelve years of university somehow didn't protect me from losing it.
Across six episodes starting this fall and into this full-length motion picture in the spring, The Chosentakes viewers to the foot of the cross to see the matchless love of God in the selfless act of his Son.
The Chosen Crucifixion opens exclusively in theaters on March 12, 2027.
