The Next Trap
Published about 19 hours ago • 2 min read
Hi Reader,
There are at least two things you could be focused on today: what you need to do now, or what's next.
While it's important to have a plan, next can be a trap.
Next is an easy distraction from what you need to get done now. Next is almost always sexier, more interesting, more carefree and a place to escape from what you need to get done now.
I have a friend who often talks about a big change before the current project is done. Maybe I need more training in marketing. Maybe I should start something new. Maybe my next project should be __________...
So why is that an issue? Well, you can get so focused on next, that you delay what needs to happen now.
If you don't focus on now, there may be no next.

If you don't focus on now, there may be no next.
The future belongs to those with a bias for action, who are so busy solving the problem they need to fix now, making the great product that needs to be done today, and building the relationships that need to be strengthened now. As a result, next opens up with new possibilities they never saw coming because their work on the now was so excellent.
Don't use next as an escape.
Sure, it's Monday. But what's the challenge you've been avoiding that needs your attention now?
Tackle that, and your next will automatically get better.
